Originally, Oswold Pack Camp was founded as an outfitting business to serve the traditional sportsman interested in big game hunting. Established in 1948 as Bear Camp by Arnolt “Arnie” Oswold as a special collaboration with the United States Forest Service, this was one of the original outfits in the area. The hard work of setting up and maintaining camps, wrangling pack and riding stock and running a seasonal business was instilled in the Oswold children, but the 3rd child and eldest son, Ralph, was particularly devoted to carrying on the legacy.
Eventually young Ralph and his wife Doris would take over the family business, rebranding Oswold Pack Camp in 1964, to continue the tradition of outfitting hunters seeking the thrill of harvesting bear, cougar, trophy elk, deer, moose, and wild alpine trout. Over time Oswold Pack Camp evolved from transient camps to having access to seasonally constructed basecamp facilities to what are now semi-permanent outfitters cabins with expanded amenities. Unfortunately, after decades of maintaining rapport with cherished clientele, Ralph was diagnosed with a terminal illness and Doris’s hand was forced to sell the asset in 2004. However, as fate may have it, in 2019 Doris and her supporters were offered an opportunity to reclaim her lifelong investment and have resumed their commitment to honoring the heritage and future of Oswold Pack Camp.
